How to set order minimums and pack sizes on Shopify
Two rules make wholesale work: an order minimum, so buyers cannot place tiny orders, and pack sizes, so they order by the case instead of the single unit. Shopify does not enforce either one natively on a standard store. Here is what they are, why wholesale needs them, and how to set both on any Shopify plan.
What order minimums and pack sizes are
An order minimum is the smallest order a buyer can submit, usually a dollar amount like $200. It keeps a stockist from placing a $30 order that costs you more to pack and ship than it earns.
A pack size (or case pack) is the number of units sold together. If your candles have a pack size of six, buyers order in sixes: six, twelve, eighteen, never four or seven. It matches how you produce and ship, and it keeps the order math clean.
Together they set the floor for a profitable wholesale order.
Can you set them natively in Shopify?
On a standard Shopify plan, not really. The regular checkout has no built-in order minimum and no pack-size enforcement, so a buyer can add a single unit and check out. Shopify's native B2B does have quantity rules and minimums, but that is on the Plus plan (around $2,300 a month). Some brands try to hack it with cart scripts or discount codes, but those are fragile and do not cover both rules cleanly. For most brands the practical answer is a wholesale app. If Plus is not on the table, here is how to sell wholesale on Shopify without Plus.
How to set them with a wholesale app
A wholesale app enforces both rules on the wholesale ordering page, on any plan.
- Order minimum: you set a dollar figure, and buyers cannot submit an order below it. A good app shows a live meter, something like "add $40 to reach the $200 minimum," so the buyer always knows where they stand.
- Pack sizes: you set a pack size per product, and buyers order in whole packs only while the app does the quantity math. Candles go out in sixes, soaps in twelves, whatever you choose. Products you sell by the single unit just keep a pack size of one.
In Casewell, both live on the Pricing and Products pages: set your minimum once, set a pack size on each product, and every wholesale order that comes in already respects them.
How to choose your minimum and pack sizes
- Order minimum: set it high enough to cover shipping and make the order worth packing. Many small brands land between $150 and $300.
- Pack sizes: match your carton, case, or production batch so picking and shipping stay simple. If you make candles in batches of six, sell them in sixes.
- Start reasonable. You can raise a minimum or change a pack size any time, and it applies to new orders right away.
